Speakers
will describe the impact on home owners, road ways and the environment of an air
cargo distribution hub at EPCAL, the former Grumman plant in Calverton.
The plans presented by Calverton Aviation and Technology in September 2022 and
revisions by the Ghermezian family in response to community opposition will be
reviewed. The process undertaken of the Riverhead Industrial Development
Agency (RIDA), the ultimate responsibility of the Town Board, public mobilization and
potential legal action will be discussed.
James Farley, Chair, Riverhead Industrial Development Agency
Calverton Aviation & Technology (CAT) told the Riverhead Industrial Development Agency (RIDA) on September 21, 2022, that it intends to build an air cargo distribution hub at EPCAL (as reported here). The goal of the Ghermezian family is to construct ten million square feet of distribution warehouses and supplementary buildings along 10,000 and 7,000 feet runways.
We call upon RIDA to objectively exercise due diligence, turn down the final authorizing resolution and deny over $10 million in mortgage and sales/use tax exemptions plus an as yet undisclosed amount in real property tax exemptions to CAT.
After that happens, the Riverhead Community Development Agency / Town Board must exercise its explicit authority to declare the Agreement of Sale null and void.
The irreplaceable land at EPCAL must be developed with environmental and economic responsibility. A massive distribution hub and air cargo flights will damage the natural habitat as well as the quality of life and property values of surrounding communities.

"Long Island has become too overcrowded. Never thought I would see the day when Deer would be walking through residential neighborhoods...but that day is already here. Lets not ruin what we still have left!"
"No Airport !!No Warehouses!!More Vineyards !More Parks !!"
"This would be an outright BETRAYAL to the homeowners and ALL residents of the area!!!!! And an environmental mess. SHUT IT DOWN NOW!!!!!!!!No one wants it except for the town board and friends……"
"Leave EPCAL the way it is! Keep the space open!"
"An air cargo hub would destroy the pristine environment at and adjacent to EpCal.The only suitable non-destructive solution has been and will be drag racing."
"I believe this is the right thing to do!"
"It’s not good for the environment"
"We need to save our natural resources and stop over developing Long Island. Climate Change is real, and we need to do everything possible to slow and reverse it. This development does the opposite of that."
"It's important to keep this space open, there are enough commercial buildings that are vacant to use."
"We need to protect our natural areas and our wildlife more than we need an air cargo hub."
"I think the current plans should be rejected. There should be better use of the property for environmental and traffic congestion reasons."
"This is one of the few grasslands we have left on Long Island. It's home to many birds including grasshopper sparrows, short-ear owls, and meadowlarks to name a few."
"This is no place for anything that will pollute the air and water as well as the peace and quite so vital to the mating of the rare bird species that inhabit the area. And Cargo planes are the worst on both counts."
"This does not belong in an agricultural community"
"Julie stoltenborg"
"I love my family and my community."
"I am tired of the natural beauty of the Island being destroyed"
"Natural spaces on Long Island are few and far between. An air cargo hub would disturb the tranquility of the entire surrounding area with constant traffic, both on land and in the air."
"I am raising children in the area and want tonoreserve the beauty of the east end. I do not want more congested roadways, additional noise and air pollution, keep the east end beautiful, clean, and safe for our children!"
"I have personally conducted bird surveys of these grasslands, and the avian community here is unmatched. We need to protect grasslands as they are the fastest disappearing habitat in the US."
"I live in Baiting Hollow, where I'm already plaqgued by noise from aircraft to/from E. Hampton and also transatlantic traffic into JFK, and from Westhampton. The idea of an air-cargo hub at Epcal petrifies me."
"I respect wildlife!!"
"ABSOLUTELY CRITICAL to save this habitat for meadow and field birds that nest here. Go put your warehouse on vacated shopping or office space, NOT on this sacred ground. Listen to us who have witnessed and cherished these birds for decades, birds such as short-eared owls and kestrels. These magnificent birds will have NO where else to go. Your plans are their death sentence. YOU, on the other hand, can go elsewhere to line your pocket$."
"This does not belong in Riverhead. We need to take our Town back!"
"There is no need for this extreme development on Eastern Long Island. Our economic generator is the bucolic land with small, quiet towns surrounded by bays, the ocean, the LI Sound, and generational farms. There is no place for this size development."
"We don’t want this area to. Scone the JFK airport of the east!"
"I do not want CAT here, don't trust them, at the meeting they only gave lip service to the RIDA. I do not want 10 Million square feet of warehouses with all the accompanying truck and air traffic."
"This is not Queens. You don’t just come into a residential area and build a huge airport. Quality of life for people and wildlife should matter!"
"We don’t want Suffolk county to become Queens! We want less traffic"
"Please leave the area as is for environmental reasons."
"Calverton is not the “Industrial Long Island” … The members of this community have sought out the quiet open farm fields and rural undeveloped areas of Long Island for the peaceful quiet nature of it’s surroundings. Shame on the Town of Riverhead for engaging in this bad business deal. The community members do not stand behind it, in fact we are totally against it! Moving forward would be unethical and negligent. After all, it should be considered as a superfund site. Dead the deal!"
"Enough is enough!!!"
"This activity is not permitted under current zoning and would be very detrimental to the health and welfare regionally."
"I live right there and do not want to hear all the noise, the pollution and the traffic."
"too much"
"When anyone is looking for a quiet, beautiful area to get some peace and quiet away from the traffic, over crowding and city life, where do they go? To the beautiful east end of Long Island. Please understand WE do not need any of what you've proposed. Calverton is perfect without you."
"This is a multi-faceted list of damages, all at the expense of Riverhead's taxpayers."
"I don’t want more air and land traffic!!"
"Warehouse to be 10 times larger than the Smithhaven Mall. Plus cargo jets noise. What is the Board thinking?"
"The warehouse to be 10 times larger than the Smithhaven Mall. Plus cargo jets noise."
"No Cargo Airport!Too big (10× the size of the mall).Too much noise.Too much traffic. Not enough transparency."
"We don't need anymore development in the Town of Riverhead. It has reached its capacity. We have to think about the quality of life and the environment and not individual greed."
"I do not support the sale of land at gruman to 555."
"There are nesting Short Eared Owls next to the runways and they are Endangered in NYS and they are untouchable. There are also nesting Bald Eagles which are still protected by the Eagle Act of 1940 which is a federal law and still in effect."
"The potential sale and development EPCAL (formerly the Grumman plant in Calverton) is the most environmentally harmful project facing the entire East End and western Suffolk County since the Shoreham nuclear plant was built. The noise levels generated by a SINGLE cargo jet taking off (140 decibels) is immediately harmful to people and animals alike. The groundwaters beneath the former Grumman plant already has contaminated and un-remediated fuel spills and a jetport can only generate more.People visit the East End of Suffolk County for our serene open spaces, farmlands, vineyards and beaches, all of which generate tourist dollars. Some buy vacation homes here and perhaps move here permanently.Folks don’t visit jet cargo ports for vacation or move to cities to be closer to them. People MOVE AWAY from jet noises and cargo jetports.Build a cargo jetport and destroy the 5 Eastern towns that make up the East End of Suffolk County and its economy."
"calverton is a small hamlet in the Town of Riverhead with many homes, farms and horse establishments. We have commercial entities but we are NOT industrial and the warehouses proposed and the cargo airstrip would change the makeup of this beautiful community forever and for the worse."
"I’m signing because air traffic will Ruin our precious area"
"I love LI this proposal will change it forever .❤️"
"We moved out to Calverton from congested Nassau County a year & a half ago for the picturesque open farmland, nature, peace & quiet. It’s so upsetting to learn that all of that is at risk due to overbuilding. Save what is here, please!!"
"no pollution-no noise want peace and quiet - this is the country!! Thats why I moved here"
"Sharon McClinchy"
"This kind of over development does not belong here and would diminish our way of life. There is not enough land here on our island for this project. We need to preserve more habitat for our wildlife."
"This project does not belong in our areaNot good for the environment or the people And absolutely no tax breaks!"
"We have enough stuff already"
"Air, ground, noise, and water pollution consequences. Protect our aquifer,"
"This is simply not sustainable for our area."
"Saving nesting and feeding grounds is essential to our existence. Birds and insects need this land to survive."
"The natural habitat at EPCAL needs to be preserved. There is a little enough space for wild animals/birds/other creatures already on the eastern end of Long Island. We also don’t need extra flights of jets over Long Island."
"This is NOT environmentally responsible!!"
"You can't trust these developers, the Ghermezians, and the East End will be ruined by this her port and logistics center. Think plans and tractor trailers!"
"Needs attention."
"If Mother Earth and all her creatures die, WE ALL DIE !!!"
"The grassland habitat that this will destroy will have a devastating impact upon several bird species already in decline on Long Island including the Eastern Bluebird, Eastern Meadowlark, American Kestrel, and Harrier Hawk."
"Although we need the economic boost, we don't want to sacrifice our precious and irreplaceable environment to get that boost."
"A superfund site already, right next to a National Veterans Cemetery. Sell it some place else. We don’t need that here."
"I'm against having warehouses and aircraft at Grumman, it will create noise, traffic and destroy the beautiful community I live in"
