Altitudes of EPCAL Cargo Flights

Distances from EPCAL Runways and altitude of planes

Distance from runway            Normal altitude

1 mile                 300 feet
5 miles                 1,500 feet
10 miles                          3,000 feet
15 miles                         4,500 feet
20 miles                         6,000 feet

Within 10 miles from the runway, the second circle, pilots are expected but not obligated to stay within a mile on either side of the yellow line, but that can vary according to weather, pilot preferences and other factors.  Beyond 10 miles, normal flight variation and potential ground area impacted are even greater.  The 10,000 foot runway is the southeast to northwest line.  For comparison, flights between JFK and Europe fly between 15,000 and 30,000 feet while over this area.

From a neighbor:    Winners and Losers

Looking through the Internet I have discovered that there will be no winners and losers among Riverhead residents if a commercial jet airport is built in Calverton. There will only be losers.

What do I mean? If you look at the FAA airport noise website , you see that Riverhead corresponds to the lowest noise classification: "Quiet Suburban Residential". That’s why we live here. That’s what gives our homes monetary and personal value. That’s what makes playing golf a pleasure. That’s what makes having a backyard barbecue or swimming in your pool fun.

However, if you look at the 2023 PANYNJ noise reports for listening stations around Kennedy Airport  you discover that there are only three listening stations that report Quiet Suburban Residential noise levels. Their codes and locations are: 1) JOLDBRK Valentine’s Lane, Old Brookville, NY 11545, 15 miles from the Kennedy Tower, 2)  JEHLS Harbor Hills Road, East Hills, NY 11576, 13 miles from the Kennedy Tower, and 3) J132BH Beach 132 Street, Belle Harbor, NY 11694, 6 miles from the Kennedy Tower.

At this point you might say, Belle Harbor isn't noisy, which is pretty close to Kennedy, so what’s the problem?  The problem is that the Belle Harbor site isn’t turned on and the “data” is meaningless, which can be verified by going here . Okay, so what’s 13 miles from the Calverton runway? The Mattituck Inlet. If they put a jet airport in Calverton and you want to preserve the value of your home, move to Mattituck.
